Fire season runs May–October, peaking in July and August. If you see smoke or flames, call 112 (the European emergency number — English-speaking operators available). Follow instructions from Civil Protection (Proteção Civil) and never drive towards smoke: most wildfire fatalities in Portugal happened on roads.
